Here’s an Agricultural Startup that has made the idea of an e-commerce portal for Agriculture possible. With the explosion of ‘Digital Platforms’ for facilitating e-commerce, the consumers at large have become comfortable using these technologies in the retail sector. What if we were to tell you, that farmers of the country are also becoming tech-savvy and adopting tech platforms for buying farm inputs thereby conveniently ordering the goods they need.
BigHaat
BigHaat.com was founded in January 2015 by Sachin Nandwana, S Kumar and Raj Kancham, who come from small towns and have a background in Agriculture. With this Agri Startup, the founder’s vision is to empower farmers by providing them with quality agro-inputs and accessories through a marketplace platform. The team currently consists of 20+ employees and is expanding gradually.
This platform is an Agri Input Market place where farmers and gardeners can buy Agricultural machinery and equipment, poultry equipment, chemical pesticides, organic insecticides, seeds, saplings etc.
Anyone can register themselves as a buyer or even a seller on their mobile application, available for both android and iOS and start ordering online from even the most rural and semi-urban locations in India. The brand offers Cash on Delivery option along with free delivery on orders above Rs 500 that proves even more efficient for small-scale farmers and nurseries.
The website also provides a ‘Missed Call’ service through which farmers can ask for a call back from the support department of BigHaat. This helps the farmers to inquire about their requirements of products, availability and quality. BigHaat has an advisory team in place to provide advice to farmers in regional languages.
BigHaat was the pioneer in India to sell Farm Inputs online by partnering with DuPont Pioneer and steadily expanding the supplier base and products portfolio to serve the larger farming community. About 45 per cent of it’s demand comes from the southern states — Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Karnataka and Tamil Nadu and the rest comes from Maharashtra, Gujrat, Madhya Pradesh and north-eastern states.
Their demand rose by up to 70% during lockdown because of Covid-19 as farmers were unable to buy inputs online during the crises, especially in low-traction states such as Meghalaya, Manipur, Mizoram, Arunachal Pradesh and Assam.
